Why Players Cheat in Rust

By Tom Capper – Updated May 28th, 2021

Rust is one of the most challenging survival games on the market, and it offers players a wide range of opportunities to make something of themselves, starting off as someone with nothing but a rock. If you can last in the game, then you might just make it to the point where you can build a helicopter.

If you’ve ever seen someone running around with a speed hack or a noclip cheat in Rust, you may have wondered exactly what led them down that path of cheating. There are so many different factors that could potentially influence someone to start cheating, so it gets a little difficult to keep track of them.

Over the course of this guide, we’re going to explore some of the most common reasons why people decide to start cheating in Rust, ranging from getting to the top of the food chain to countering other cheaters. Some of these reasons may be relatively common and easy to guess, while others may surprise you, so let’s start taking a look at them.

Getting to the Top Before a Wipe

One of the most convincing factors that gets people to start hacking in Rust is that cheats give them the ability to get to the point where they’re a lot more capable. Technology is everything in Rust, and it takes a lot of time and resources to get to the point where you can start exerting your will on others.

When you first get started with just a rock and you’re dropped into a randomly generated map, then you may have absolutely no idea what to do. In most cases, players band together so they’ll be able to make the most of their limited resources and so they can share crucial knowledge with each other.

If you’d rather avoid doing this, then using cheats will allow you to get a pretty significant edge over other players. By using something like a loot ESP, you’ll be able to see where you can get your hands on all of the best resources, and you can even see things like scrap chests and other kinds of deposits.

Along with finding resources, simply being more aware of where you can find other players will make it a lot easier for you to keep your resources and survive. Since getting killed by other players will likely lose you everything you’re carrying, staying alive is just as crucial as finding the resources in the first place.

Impressing Friends

Rust is a game that you’re often expected to play with friends or at least a clan of other players, and that means that you’ll have to pull your own weight. If you’re playing with a crowd of strangers, you may even find yourself being ostracized from the group due to your poor performance.

On the other hand, if you’re playing with your friends, then the worst thing that can happen to you is that they’ll make fun of you for your lack of skill. However, this can get annoying if your friends are always sending jabs your way for your performance, and you just may want to prove them wrong.

If you want to hide the fact that you’re using cheats from your friends, then you’ll be able to prove them wrong pretty easily and you’ll be the one that they’re relying on the whole time. From finding all of the resources with a loot ESP to warning them of enemy ambushes with an enemy ESP, you’ll be the most valuable member of your group.

Of course, if you ever run into a group of enemies, you’ll also be able to take them on much more effectively by using an aimbot to lock on to targets more effectively. Whether someone is trying to dodge your aim by strafing and jumping, an aimbot will allow you to more effectively track them.

Fighting Players Who Have Progressed Further Than You

Fighting against people who are at a higher technological level than you in Rust is often nearly impossible. Imagine trying to face someone with a bow and arrow when they’re coming at you with fully automatic weapons. Most people would shudder at the thought, but it might become a little simpler with the right cheats.

Even if someone is flying around in a helicopter griefing you and your friends, you might be able to fight back against them if they decide to start hovering at the wrong moment. With an aimbot, you’ll easily be able to track people in the helicopter, and if you have even a basic gun, you may be able to do some damage.

However, the difference between you and other players’ tech levels doesn’t even have to be that drastic. Even if someone has a basic gun and you’re running around with a crossbow, there’s a good chance that they’ll be able to kill you if you’re not using hacks that can put you on an equal level.

Along with an aimbot, you’ll be able to use your enemy ESP to keep track of where everyone else is, and that will ensure that you never get surprised by them. In a game like Rust, the element of surprise is a huge part of making sure you can more easily win a fight with the opposition.

Getting Even With Other Cheaters

Finally, yet another reason why you may wish to cheat in Rust is because it will let you compete with other cheaters, who tend to be relatively prevalent in Rust. If you like the idea of being able to fight your opponents on a level playing field, having cheats of your own will ensure that you’re able to fight back effectively.

For example, if someone is running around with an aimbot and a speed hack, then you’ll likely be unable to do anything against them unless you can lock on to them with your own aimbot. Being able to dispense some much-needed justice to a cheater that’s been annoying you is a great feeling.
